# Get started with TurnPanel Personal

Download the desktop app, pick your agents, name your first space and sign in. About two minutes to your first job.

## Download and open it

TurnPanel Personal is the desktop app. It runs on macOS with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and on Windows on x64. On Linux, use [TurnPanel Server](/docs/get-started-server): it runs as a service or with Docker, and the Linux installer's `--personal` option (or `TURNPANEL_VARIANT=personal`) sets it up for one person. Intel Macs aren't supported.

The app is in preview, so the download says Preview and shows its version. Builds are not notarised yet (it is pending with Apple, who are taking their time), so macOS blocks the first launch. Clear it once by running the command below in Terminal. It removes the download's quarantine flag from the app, which is what macOS checks. Or try to open TurnPanel, then go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, and choose Open Anyway.

```sh
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/TurnPanel.app
```

## The setup

On a Mac, the first start downloads the base image that sandboxed spaces are made from. It happens once. TurnPanel can also run as a background service, so spaces keep working when the window is closed. The app's start page offers this with a Run in the background button and asks for your computer's password once. If you choose to run only while the app is open, spaces stop when you quit.

The first start walks you through a short setup. Each page asks one thing, and every button says what it does. There is no account to create: Personal is just you, and it opens on your computer with no sign-in.

1. **Bring over TurnPanel 1 (only if it is found).** If TurnPanel 1 is installed on this computer, an import page comes next. You can skip it and bring it over later. See [Moving from TurnPanel 1](/docs/moving-from-v1).
2. **Pick your agents.** Choose the agents you use: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode and Grok Build. pi is built in and always on. Nothing else is preselected.
3. **Name your first space.** A space is a home for a project, a team or anything you work on. Give it a name and an icon. It runs in a sandbox, a small separate computer inside yours. TurnPanel installs the agents you picked into it. When the space runs in a sandbox, the same page lets you share folders from this computer (optional). Choose Can edit or Read only. Nothing is shared unless you add it.
4. **Sign in to your agents.** Each agent has a Sign in button that opens its own sign-in. You use your own account for each. You can skip this and sign in later.
5. **A local model (only if your computer can run one).** If you have an Apple silicon Mac with at least 5 GB of free memory, or a graphics card with at least 6 GB of video memory (integrated graphics do not count), TurnPanel offers one model sized to your machine. Otherwise the page is skipped. If you skip it, pi has no model until you add one in Settings.

## On Windows

Sandboxed spaces are not available on Windows yet. Your first space runs directly on the computer instead, and the setup says so and asks you to confirm. A space like that can read and change anything your Windows account can. Use it only for work you would run yourself.

> **No sandbox on Windows yet**
> Without a sandbox, a space runs directly on the computer. The setup asks you to confirm this before it makes the space.

## Start your first job

The last page of the setup opens a checklist that stays in the app: Sign in to your agents, Start your first job, Build a tool with the App SDK, and Connect a TurnPanel account.

Press Start my first job. Pick an agent, say what you want done, and send it. To try the App SDK, open Build a tool with the App SDK on the checklist. It starts a job with Help me make an app for already typed. Finish the sentence, for example with tracking my reading.

## You do not need a TurnPanel account

Everything runs on your computer with no account, and on your computer you never sign in. Connect a TurnPanel account later, in Settings under TurnPanel account, only if you want Pro's hosted services: hosted models, web search and remote access.

Using Personal from your phone or another computer needs that account on Pro: open TurnPanel's address there and choose Sign in with TurnPanel. Personal has no passwords and no other people. For a team, use [TurnPanel Server](/server), free on your own servers, or [TurnPanel Cloud](/cloud).
