# Models

A model is the AI that generates answers and reasoning for Jobs, background maintenance, or Voice Mode.

## Model and agent are different

The model generates the response. The agent gives it instructions, tools, memory, Job context, and permission-controlled actions.


## Local, Online, and Hybrid

- Local uses a model downloaded to this computer.

### Choose Local, Online, or Hybrid

**Context:** Models

The model picker separates Local, Online, and Hybrid choices.

- **Local** [local]: Downloaded model on this computer
- **Online** [online]: Configured provider or compatible endpoint
- **Hybrid** [active]: Local first with configured escalation tiers
- **Air Gap** [ready]: Removes online and Hybrid choices
- Online sends the request to a model provider you have connected.
- Hybrid chooses between your configured local and online models. Hybrid is a routing setting, not its own model.


## Choosing a model

Start with TurnPanel’s hardware recommendation. You can choose a model for one Job or set defaults for a Space or App. Background maintenance and Voice Mode have their own model settings.
